Lawn Care Tips
It’s fall and we are rolling right into the winter season. Here are some lawn tips for the season!
1. Leaf Removal: As the leaves begin to fall, it's essential to keep your lawn clear of them. Piles of leaves can smother your grass, blocking sunlight and air, leading to fungal issues and dead patches. Use a rake or leaf blower to regularly remove fallen leaves from your lawn.
2. Aerate Your Lawn: Aerating your lawn in the fall can do wonders for its health. Aerating involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow better air, water, and nutrient penetration to the grassroots. You can rent or buy a lawn aerator or hire a professional to do it for you.
3. Fertilize: Fall is an excellent time to fertilize your lawn. Choose a fertilizer with a higher ratio of phosphorus and potassium (the second and third numbers on the fertilizer label) to promote root growth and winter hardiness. Avoid fertilizers high in nitrogen, as they can encourage excessive growth that's more susceptible to winter damage.
4. Overseed Bare Spots: If you have bare or thin patches in your lawn, overseeding in the fall can help fill them in. Choose a grass seed that is suitable for your region and spread it evenly over the affected areas. Keep the newly seeded areas consistently moist until the grass establishes itself.
5. Mow at the Right Height: Adjust your lawnmower to a slightly lower cutting height in the late fall, but don't cut too short. Taller grass helps protect the roots from cold temperatures and reduces the risk of weed growth. Aim to leave your grass around 2-2.5 inches tall.
