Lawn Care Tips
1. Clean Up & Rake Debris (Late February - Early March)
Remove any leaves, branches, or thatch buildup to prevent mold and disease.
If your lawn has heavy thatch (more than ½ inch), consider dethatching.
This is especially important for Zoysia and Bermuda, which can develop thick thatch.
2. Pre-Emergent Herbicide (Early March - Mid-March)
Crabgrass and other weeds start germinating when soil reaches ~50-55°F.
Apply a pre-emergent like Prodiamine to prevent weeds like crabgrass and poa annua.
DO NOT overseed right after applying pre-emergent, as it stops all seeds from sprouting.
3. Aeration (For Compacted Lawns - Mid to Late March)
If you have Tall Fescue, consider aerating in early spring if the soil is compacted.
If you have Bermuda or Zoysia, wait until late spring (May) when they start actively growing.
4. Fertilization (Timing Based on Grass Type)
Tall Fescue (Cool-Season Grass)
Needs light fertilization in early spring (March) but avoid too much nitrogen—it promotes disease.
Use a slow-release fertilizer like 16-4-8 or 10-10-10 to support early-season growth.
Bermuda & Zoysia (Warm-Season Grasses)
DO NOT fertilize yet! Wait until the grass is fully green and actively growing (late April - May).
Too much nitrogen too early can wake it up too soon, making it vulnerable to late frosts.
5. Spot Seeding (Only for Tall Fescue Lawns - March)
Fescue struggles in summer heat, so fill in bare spots before it gets too warm.
Use a high-quality Tall Fescue blend, cover with a light layer of compost, and water lightly.
If you applied pre-emergent, don’t seed in the same areas!
6. Soil pH Test & Amendments (Anytime in March)
Tennessee soils tend to be acidic, so you may need lime to raise the pH.
A simple soil test can tell you if lime or sulfur is needed.
Ideal pH:
Tall Fescue: 6.0 - 6.8
Bermuda/Zoysia: 5.8 - 6.5
7. Mower Tune-Up & First Cut (March - Early April)
Sharpen blades for a clean cut. Dull blades tear the grass, causing stress.
First mow height:
Tall Fescue: 3.5 - 4 inches
Bermuda: 1 - 1.5 inches (once it greens up)
Zoysia: 1.5 - 2 inches
8. Adjust Watering (Only If Needed in March - April)
In Mt. Juliet, spring rain is usually enough until May.
Only water if you get less than 1 inch of rain per week.
Summary for Middle TN (Spring Prep):
✅ Pre-emergent (March) for weed control
✅ Aerate (only if compacted), fertilize lightly for Tall Fescue
✅ Wait to fertilize Bermuda/Zoysia until late April/May
✅ Check soil pH and apply lime if needed
✅ Sharpen mower blades and start mowing at proper height
🚫 Avoid watering too early—spring rain is usually enough
🚫 Don't overseed if you applied pre-emergent
